50 kilometres for 50 years of Queer Pride.
Pride events are a staple in any queer calendar but not all pride events are the same. Over the past decade, many small-scale pride events have popped up in the UK, with over 200 happening this year.
In 2022, our founder and chairperson, Daniel Hope, set to change this. In six short months, Daniel, along with his 11-strong committee, has raised over £12,000 towards the cost of running their events, which has been achieved through the community's generosity and sponsorship from local businesses, including their lead partner Bond Street Distillery. But Daniel isn’t stopping there! On this year’s summer solstice, Daniel and his parents will be taking on a monumental feat in aid of Hinckley Pride. Daniel said,
“I knew when I started Hinckley Pride that I would need to do something spectacular to raise funds and most importantly awareness.. as such, 50K in a Day was born! When I told my parents about the idea, I thought they would laugh, as I am certainly no gym bunny, but instead, they said they would join me. This meant the world to me, not only for their support but for the fact they are proud to walk side by side supporting something important for the local queer community and me.”
Vicechair Kelly adds,
“Dan always said he wanted to go big, but 50K is pretty impressive. We will cheer them on as a committee and wait with a well-earned drink at the finish line. We wish them the best and ask everyone who can support them by donating to their sponsor page!"
The walk was devised in 2022 when Hinckley Pride was formed, with the 50 kilometres representing 50 years of pride within the UK. This event is not only to raise funds but much-needed awareness of the queer community locally. The 50 kilometres route will see them trekking through all areas of the Hinckley and Bosworth borough.
Daniel adds,
“Although I know this will not be easy, walking each kilometre, reflecting on the steps paved before me by the incredible queer community, is an honour and something I will be forever proud of"
